Protest the attacks: How and Where

On the 7th and 8th of March, there are two big public events being planned in Bangalore in response to the attacks.

People who are in Bangalore, for the love of every last chaddi, participate and organise events around the 7th and 8th. We need the events to be big and scary. I think that as many people as can manage should go to Bangalore on these two days. This is really no time to reserve our troops and what is happening right now is war. Buy cheap tickets, come to Bangalore.

Watch this space. We will be posting things you can do to get involved to protest the attacks on women in Karnataka.

1. Join the walk to the Police Commissioner's Office on March 7, 2009. More details soon.

2. Join the massive Take Back The Night campaign on March 8, 2009.

3. Join the campaign addressed to bystanders.

4. If you can't go to Bangalore organise a Pink Chaddi event in your town.

5. If you live abroad, you could join the email campaign here.

6. If you are from the media look for the press release and details about the attacks.

7. Join the poster campaign: Cut/Burn/Print/Paste

  1. think that a peaceful rally is a great idea.First off, let us all agree upon the fact that this goonda group that attacked women in mangalore did so for cheap publicity and to intimidate business people in mangalore to pay up hafta. Which is why, we are going to pledge that we will not give them any more publicity. Therefore, from now on, let us pledge that we will never mention the name of that goonda group ever. We will never mention them by any other name other than goonda group, that way the name of their group doesn't get unnecessary publicity. We will only refer to any goonda as just goonda or rowdies.Repeated attacks on women citizens is to be viewed as the government apathy with the law and order situation in a state. The central government needs to look at this as a law and order situation and take some action. Now that there is a going to be a peaceful march, I would suggest that a prior email is sent to the police commisioner informing that a peaceful rally will take this route to finally end at his office inorder to discuss the safety of women citizens of the state. The media needs to cover this rally .The email campaign is a great idea. The emails need to be sent to all people responsible for the safety of citizens in the country.I would advice not just women from karnataka but also women from all over the country to take five minutes and please send an email expressing your concern about the safety situation in the state.I would also suggest that women and men(the law abiding proactive non-ignorant and non-selfish,non-pschotic men of india) please use their own words in expressing their fears about the law and order sitauation in the state in the emails to the central govt. and in their blogs and in local peaceful campaigns urging more safety measures for all citizens.I would also suggest that all women deliberately wear jeans and tshirt (even if they are not in the mood to do) and assert their personal choice of dress.I do not think that any normal guy would go and try to strip a woman in public unless he is vey sexually perverted and frustrated and is trying to vent out his personal anger on stranger.I would also suggest that the dress code for everyone attending all peace rallies and meeting is only going to be jeans and tshirts.every human being has every right to dress how they please. The government needs to understand that half of the voters in the state are women. Needless to say that many of them voted to bring the present state government into power. It is the duty of the state government to manintain law and order situation in the state. There is absolutely no excuse to allow citizens to fend for themselves. We are paying taxes so that the police force is paid salaries so that they can protect the women and men of the state.Meanwhile, all these incidents must be a lesson to all voters for all future voting sessions. Voting is done by secret ballot. Please go and vote to only non extremist groups or political parties .Otherwise the state will become as lawless as it has become now.I also suggest that we form a proactive chain of citizens all over the country. We need to form a blogger chain that is interconnected by atleast one follower . Information about proactive rallies need to be exchanged via blogs and emails. Looks like we need to start another independant struggle here. Ahimsa and peaceful rallies are the way to go.Also , women, even if you are from the smallest city plese go out and vote for the most nonextremist parties .And yes, please only wear jeans. Any vehicle that stops near you , immediately note down the vehicle number and sms your friends the number. Call 100 as soon you see someone approaching you in a threatening manner. Stay firm, stand right there and tell them not to come near you.Ask them a few questions about indian history and culture to those goons and pretty soon , their ignorance about indian culture will be out there for everyone to see.If you are a bystander, go far away from this hussle, look for a public coin booth phone and immediately call 100 and tell them that somebody is being assualted at this particular address. India is a democracy and vote is our power. Whether male or female, fight for your liberty. Use your vote

"After 26 years as a nun, Jesme Raphael gave up her robes and walked out of the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel, the Catholic order in Kerala, India, that had been her home for three decades. Two years later, Raphael, now 53, has come out with her memoirs, Amen: An Autobiography of A Nun, cataloging lurid details of bullying, sexual abuse and homosexuality in the oldest Catholic women's order in the idyllic coastal state in southern India. Shocking as it is, the book is only the latest in a long series of accusations and scandals afflicting the Catholic Church in the state with the largest population of Christians in India. "

  8. Count me in. One question though: How many of the victims filed a police complaint? An important thing to notice is that if you don't file a complaint, then police is not going to act. Karnataka police can take suo moto action in this regard. Earlier this type of inaction happened when women were molested during New Year celebration in Mumbai. At the same time a foreigner was molested in Kochi, and the Cochin SP took suo motto case against the accused though the victim didn't come forward with a complaint.

So one thing for you to really do is to get in touch with the victims and get a complaint filed. Support the victims in every way possible.

  11. It's sad to see what's happening in my city. No person should feel unsafe in our cities. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. One reason is that the police and the government has not acted strictly against such elements. The police needs to books these people under the strictest of laws which will ensure harsh punishment for these men

Protest and walks are all good. I'm glad that a lot more of us are not keeping quiet at what's happening around us and are taking a stand. But these protests can only work to a certain extent. For the politicians to take us seriously, we need to be electorally important! We need to go out and vote and reject candidates or parties which overtly or covertly support such goons.

To help all of us register to vote, we could visit http://jaagore.com . Let's at least make a start by being part of the system we want to reform!

  14. [SRI RAMA SENE ISSUES LEGAL NOTICES(The Hindu)]

DHARWAD: Taking strong exception to the “Pink Chaddi” campaign, the Sri Rama Sene on Friday issued legal notices to eight persons, including Nisha Susan who led the campaign.
Dharwad advocates R.D. Kulkarni and Meenakshi Kulkarni have asked all of them to apologise within 15 days or face legal action. The notices have been sent to their residences in Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Goa, Puducherry and Mumbai. — Staff Correspondent

[ATTACKING GIRLS NOT OUR CULTURE: Advani (TOI)]
BANGALORE: It may have come a bit late, but welcome nevertheless. Disapproval of moral
policing comes from the BJP’s highest
    echelons.
Condemning the Mangalore pub attack, senior BJP leader L K Advani on Saturday said that there is no compromise on it. “This is against Indian culture, Indian ethos. Girls and boys have their own ways. We may approve or disapprove it. But I cannot condone any attack on girls or women,” he said.

He added: “You should not impose rules on people. After all, Gandhiji, too, wanted prohibition, but he did not impose it on Indians. That is why it became one of the directive principles in the Constitution. I’m not going into the question of prohibition. But I cannot condone any attack on girls or women.’’

    ----------------------------------------

So our Muthalik after a lot of after thoughts has finally come to a self realization that the pink chaddis were indeed an insult to him? But why should pink chaddis be an insult after all? Chaddy is an inner wear which every one wears, and it is even medically advised especially for men. So why should it cause pain to Muthalik that too after a long time? (Girls, did anyone put etching powder in one of those chaddis which Muthalik tried day before yesterday or so?)

Any way our Muthalik felt offended. If we have followed Gandhigiri, we should have send roses (NOT pink roses, pink roses are against our culture, pink is haram to Muthalik). But we chose pink chaddis instead.

Or Muthalik might not have liked the quality of chaddis? But he should have told us, instead of sending a legal notice, we would have happily exchanged those with high quality, 100% pure cotton VIP chaddis. Or if he has some specific brand in mind, he should have told us.

Or is it that these Dharwad advocates R.D. Kulkarni and Meenakshi Kulkarni were out of job, that Muthalik chose to give them some work? Nothing is clear :( Let us see who is going to win. Perverts or law abiding citizens.

It is like outburst of plague. It is spreading like a communicable disease and there is danger that it will engulf whole country if not treated fast. After Manglore now it has reached Banglore.

After all such goons are not interested in welfare of our culture or country but they are interested only in molesting women.

They enjoy harassing women and love it because it gives them feeling that women are still weak and they can use them as they wish. Forget it.....

I just show this group some incidents which have happened in states other than Karnataka.

But never mind, these are "MINOR" incidents like rape, Rape of minors or Gang rape etc when compared to what the group is campaigning against in Bangalore.

My request to the Chaddi group is protest against these as well if you find some spare time from "Talibanistan of India" aka Karnataka. (If you are too busy, forget it. Just ignore my commments)

  21. Dear Pink Chaddi Campaigners!

I really appreciate your efforts; you peoples by sitting inside those air conditioned cubicles are doing a wonderful job for the normal and ordinary females like us who are verymuch comfortable in living a happy and secure life by following the unwritten yet very clear laws defined by our caring parents and brothers. Pls don’t consider each and every females in this country belongs to your category people who loves do anything if it is believed to be modern or any activity which the westerners are doing in the label of individual freedom. We are extremely happy with the freedom we are enjoying in the society and we never need the freedom beyond that limit so that we can go to pubs during midnights and enjoy the whole night inside having drinks and do all that modern adventurous stuffs with other like minded males/females.
Do you want to let the world know that Indian women are ultra modern like you, who are ready to give away their stinking chaddis to anyone in public?
By supporting pub going loose(?) and forward women, will you be also able to protect the majority of normal and temple/church going simple and not so modern females like us from the Pub going loose and ultra modern male colleagues (who are there with you people with full support, Its pretty clear what these men really wants by supporting you)?

Anyway the Great Pink Chaddi Campaign is proving to be really effective day after day, the response that the normal people like we are getting in the streets these days proving the effectiveness of your campaign. Now that, people like us are forcibly manhandled in daylight by the pink chaddi fans, their intensions are pretty clear, they just wanted to check whether we are Loose, modern and pub going, by checking the color of our chaddis in public. Now we are not able to wear modern looking attires like jeans or long skirts, because the pink chaddi fans will approach us for a date thinking that we are modern loose pub going open minded girls…

Nonsense got its own limits… So please stop the nonsense in the name of individual freedom, if you people are having any other political/regional agendas, plzz spare us.
If you have anything to do with the BJP or any other rightwing parties, deal with them in straight line, rather than creating such cheap and third rate gimmicks.

Please do not make us more insecure in our own land… It’s a request.

    Avanthika.

  22. avanthika...
love the way you choose to say you wear skirts why? who gave you that freedom... you yourself right, so how can you hate on a person who gave themselves the freedom to stay out till late... No wonder people shall leave india as soon as they get a good chance and the countries they migrate to make use of talent there great....Also no one asked you drink.. i dont get how just keep pulling stuff out from anywhere....also eve teasing was a huge problem before this campaign was even formed...
I love how people are playing the rich people campaign card here... LOL if these girls are rich they would not be going out to work... and if they were rich they would hire people to beat people attacking them, do we see people harassing movie stars .....

LOL Sudhir as i said do not randomly pick up words in my sentence... read what i wrote.. it was to the reply that ppl are harassing women because of the pink protest...no eve teasing existed wayy before and maybe if ppl stepped up a bit more to that things would be different but then again some one somewhere would obviously find something offensive to that protest as well.. anyways..to each his own.. i cant argue anymore in this blog atleast where i am things work on a hugely different basis... kudos to those who try and those who oppose this told you so are very bitter words.. 26. I now know why the police is reluctant to increase safety measures on streets. Almost 88% of all police officers got transferred after the new Government came into power. Many of these officers were transferred without completion of their normal tenure at a particular place of posting.
Looks like the government is trying pass some kind of transfer law where the CM gets to decide who needs to be transferred and who cannot.
No wonder the Police force is so apathetic. They are mere puppets of the present government.
Mr.Bidari made this comment when the fearless karnataka rally went there to present a memorandum regarding the lack of safety on streets.
He said and I quote," I don't know about fearless karnataka or fearfull karnataka, but bangalore is safe. "
such comments are called , "riculous apathetic " comments.
If a group of women including some victims who got recently got attacked take out a rally and come to you , the police commisioner , to present to you their concerns, You cannot make fun of them .
It is your job as police commisioner to look into the matter, no matter what your personal beliefs are. If those women have got attacked, that means there is safety concerns. You cannot outright not acknowledge it at all.
What you are here for Mr.Police commisioner? Is it not your job to hear to their complaints and look into the matter?

  27. This is very sad that madam renuka Choudhari, our hon. minister for women and child development is not concerned about matters that required more attention as a minister and more concerned about women's right to go to Pubs PDA on Valentines day
    # She is asking us - Pub Bharao -- My parents taught me drinking is not a good habit and i don't think people go to pub to eat Masala Dosa or Bhelpuri
    # A women had to sell her new born baby to pay Bribe to doctor in Government Hospital and our Minister for women and child development responds --- “At least, she is safe and at least the child is not dead and not killed. I think they are the most important things that we need to look at,” --- How cool , we need such ministers --- and this incident happend in her own constituency
    # A Flash back --July 2007 , Renuka's advice to Indian Women --Don’t trust Your Men, trust Condom, and in the name of reduce the AIDS--------- I thougt the foundation of any successful family is mutual Trust and understanding between Members of family .. See how wrong i was .. nowadays family is build upon trust on condom
    # Word of Wisdom from her after Passing the domestic violence act --- It’s turn to suffer the Indian men, as women suffered for long. -----No wonder Renuka Chowdhary has filed a complaint against her daughter Poojita’s in-laws, accusing them of harassment for dowry..

When it comes to protecting the right of women going to pubs and indulging in immoral acts in Public ( don't counter me please if you don't know what is happening in Bandra bandstand and many other parks in Mumbai , Delhi , Punjab etc ..... atleast these so called couple should think there may be senior citizens , kids and decent family who also want to use these parks and beaches to releax after a hard day's work ) she gets extra energy and all over the news .. she even told she may land up in bangalore on valentines day ..... Madam First go to your constituency where a baby was sold to pay bride to govt. doctor

  32. Sorry folks but I have to repeat my comments for the benefit of those folks who are not given complete information under the freedom of information act....

We all know it's Kalyug. A famous song from a bollywood movie has following lines

    Raamchandra keh gaye siyaase
    aaisa kaljug aayega
    hans chugega daana tinka
    kawwa moti khaayega

AND IN THE END IT HAS FOLLOWING LINES....

    mandir soona soona hoga
bhari rahengi madhushaala(Pubs if u dont know)
pitaa ke sang sang bhari sabhaa mein
    naachengi ghar ki baala

The crimes against women can be REDUCED and will be REDUCED if our media doesn't portray a woman as an object or commodity. The provocative images from women actress in Bollywood, electronic and print news media... loose and sadakchhap language used in news...Our greatest role model of modern generation Aishwarya Rai giving kissing scenes just before becoming Mrs Bachhan... discussions about which hero has smooched how many heroines and who lost his/her virginity at what age...and the list goes on and on. These sins are being accepted as the qualities in this Kalyug time.

The Indian news media and bollywod sends two signals to people who have recently reached the age of puberty and also plays havoc in the mind of even those who are past their prime age.....

    1) Message for girls/women is that it's your freedom to do whatever you like. I think this is a noble cause. This is a really good way to move a country forward. A woman can and should do almost everything a man can do except few jobs such as fighting on the front in a war against a foreign nation.

But our elite news media and bollywood also tells them that it's ok to have multiple men in your life just for fun and it's ok to do dirty dancing, cheap sadakchhap talks, get drunk and forget about something called "Descency". These kind of women are called sl_ts even in western world. In India there is a different word for it called "Kulta".
Media is fueling this kulta behaviour in Indian women without informing them the lack of will and rampant corruption in our police force or judiciary. There is very little chance to get any kind of justice if they fall into the hands of rogue elements of the society and the trauma of such experience will always stay in their memories. What Ram Sena activists did doesn't even fall into severe kind of crimes which could possibly happen to a drunken girl in the middle of night.

    2) The message for men is not so good. The media like NDTV, star news, aajtak etc. by using provocative footage from bollywood movies and wave of second class cheap heroines are helping in fueling this stray dog behaviour in men by showing vulgarity from bollywood movies, cheap shows, serials NON-STOP and 24X7 . Our award winning news channels NDTV, aajtak, star news etc. etc. are just shitholes when I compare them with other foreign news channels from around the world. They also have weaknesses but they don't stoop to low level like our news channels such as star news, aajtak, NDTV and many more....

This kind of TAMASHA news creates a society which is morally bankrupt and doesn't help in any way to create a good society. This irresponsible behaviour of news media is increasing crimes against women and in general against whole society. In return news channels have lots of crimes to report every single day and are never short of them. In other words media is FEEDING on the FILTH it beams every single day. This will ensure that each and every anchor, producer and others from these news channels are immune even to a deep recession and having a GREAT time. There business model is here to stay unless there are more people like Ram Sena who just need to change their focus from these girls to MEDIA people. These girls are just a by product of those in the media and movies..Ram Sena's motive was good but the execution and target was poor. But as we all know that in every war there is collateral damage and if you look at the bigger picture...if we start beating the shit out of the media people who act irresponsibily...we can have a healthy society and can reach a solution where both freedom of women and descency can be protected without any fear.

Ram Sena's role in crime against women is perhaps 0.0001%...Bollywood's wave of cheap heroines from past decade may have contributed 10%. But the non-stop 24X7 filthy news where women is a commodity from our ELITE NEWS media shoulders rest of the responsibility.

I hope these jokers including BARKHA DUTT and others who claim to have won the best journalist award should realize their responsibilties. Look in the mirror first before you come on the TV to resolve the burning issues of this country...these idiots are part of creating this criminal society and their crocodile tears won't solve it unless they do JOURNALISM WITH RESPONSIBILITY and cut down their filthy programs or beam them at late night.
