Sorry to report a fresh incident. This makes it the fifth incident in two days.
We have just heard of another incident where a 20 year old girl was attacked somewhere near Cunningham road or Palace road. Details are unclear. The little we know seems to indicate that there were 4 men and she was attacked for wearing jeans.
No FIR has been filed. This happened at the same time as our meeting yesterday evening.

This is plain sad. Women learn to work your knee or heel! Why doesn't one representative from the group down in Karnataka, file a PIL regarding this incident?
ReplyDeleteU all guys are actually making a mess of yourselves , now trying to get down into the business of selling freedom products?
ReplyDeleteGet real, there are too many problems happening with GDP slipping to 5% and economic gloom taking away jobs from millions. If u want to spend some quality time, please reach out to fight these real problems. Women issues no doubt need attention, but then Gid forbids if economy turns worse, its women who are going to suffer more, bear more abuses from their husbands..... Try changing that India rather than this fake India u all r trying to portray!
@Predict: If equality and security for all is not part of your India, I want none of that. Maybe you'd be happier in China - "f*** freedom, we just want money."

ReplyDeleteA chaddi campaign for the slipping GDP would work wonders, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteWhat I'd like to know is are these incidents new to B'lore or are you just being attentive to them now? Or, and this I'd find bizarre indeed, are they politically motivated as was hinted in the last post?
We protested, we sent those pink chaddis and we formed groups. and the attacks seem to be mounting... I've lived all my life in Bangalore and it used to be the safest city in the world. Now, I'm plain getting pissed off. The attacks are happening in the most active parts of the city... and people are just watching?!?! And I find it really strange nobody has asked the government what the hell they are doing (or did that bit of news slip by me with all the attacks?)
ReplyDeleteand @Predict - If you are so concerned abt growth of India, go to one of the villages and help out the farmers. India is 70 pct agricultural and they are really suffering cuz the asses who'd helped carry their loads ran away. ('Course now we know where the asses ran to eh?)

Aw man, these guys are beyond cheap. Where do they get off doin these things? I can't believe they do these things and expect rewards from God. It's ironic.
ReplyDelete@RS,Bugsy , et al pink undie campaigners
ReplyDeleteRather than frothing and fuming in these closed and secure Internet spaces and few moments of glory with coveted NDTV and other Page 3 segments of the media, I guess its better if you could slip into Indian shoes. Aping an eastern version of bra burning would perhpas take you where you all are now, a pack of pink undergarment parcels while the real dons move about freely and more attacks /revenge vented out on women.
What is your opinion about women in Rajasthan who force abortion on other women because their womb happened to sustain a female fetus?
What kind of bras or panties do you propose for them?
Similarly the fate of those thousands of female prostitutes who keep venturing into this trade because our society cannot prescribe a social and moral behaviour, might need your help... and what do you propose? Send another set of those panties to pimps,politicians and corrupt police officers?
This whole thing does not work. Firstly because while Indian women seek freedom like their American peers they are unwilling at the same time to adopt American culture wholeheartedly - which would mean no longer lobbying for husbands/partners based on what they earn but rather choose partners based on sexual compatibility..a multiple times. Not that Indian women are not into this kind of engagements, but then unlike American women who do not give much importance to the kind of riches her partner is exposed to, Indian forward women on the other hand would selectively bed only those guys who can shell out enough from his wallet.
For a third world nation like us, which has less to earn and more to feed, pink chaddi campaigns is a geek delight for select few from South Mumbai elite NRI crowd. That India is reeling under an agonising economic downturn hurting the core of Indian mainstream- the framers, is grossly undermined by such campigners. That women issues widen more than just few attacks on Banglore ladies, is yet to be understood by this alien community. This campaign comfortably removes a whole bulk of middle class Indian women who comprise the majority. It caters to few condom friendly, pub going , free bed sharing entertainers, who have assumed India to be a colonial cousin of America without actually taking the American oath!
@Predict
ReplyDeleteYou have rightly pointed out some real issues which we hardly pay attention to. But that doesn't belittle the cause that they are fighting for. I hope campaigners take your points into consideration and widen this campaigns focus. Freedom to go to pubs and to wear jeans are definitely something to pursue. But there are people who craves for the freedom to live. So we need to broaden the definition of freedom. Then only this campaign can sustain itself.
For this I have an example from history. Mahatma Gandhi was subjected to discrimination in South Africa. Then Indians in South Africa was business men, but they were less in number. Then Mahatma Gandhi started his campaign against Apartheid. Thus he garnered the support of majority blacks in his campaign.
Widen your campaign, take up real issues concerning women, or perish.

Today there is an sms doing the rounds asking women to be careful of their "dress code" because of the attacks. These messages are being circulated by "well meaning" women to warn their friends. Whoever is behind these attacks is certainly winning for now.
ReplyDelete@Predict:
ReplyDeleteYou assume I (and other folks here) don't care about female infanticide, dowri deaths etc. When you assume... Sorry, you only make an ass of yourself.
Re-read your original comment - you solely focused on economic issues, without regard to the other issues you claim to be interested in later on. That sole focus is what I was responding to.
As for Pink Chaddi (I do not speak for them) - the same rule applies. How do you know they are not interested in other issues? And what is so wrong with fighting for plain personal security anyway? What gives *anybody* the right to assault folks for looking different, wearing different clothes, etc.? How is the concept of personal freedom the sole preserve of Western countries?
Where are the patrolling police vans? The citizens are not paying taxes to fund the police force for nothing.
ReplyDeleteThe police patrol vans are here for protecting citizens.The police need to take strict action.
This is a matter of public safety
Unless the men that were beating up women were wearing dhotis, they are not really bothered about culture at all.These men are just sore losers who are jealous of smart independant women.It is ridiculous when you see jeans clad men wearing shirts and then hitting women for wearing jeans.It is absolutely ridiculous and a joke.
ReplyDeleteThese men need to wear a katchha, a dhoti and a angvastram.No shirts and no jeans and no underwear allowed for these psychotic men.
@Predict: Your post shows just how prejudiced and deluded you are.
ReplyDeleteFirst, as RS has said, how can you assume that we do not care about dowry crimes, female infanticide, etc.?
Second, instead of sneering at those who are doing SOMETHING to stop what they believe is wrong, why do you not start a campaign on falling GDP, economic recession, etc.?
Third, please do remember that sociology and economics go together.
Fourth, did you know some women opt for prostitution freely? The same goes for men. And why are prostitutes so wrong? Because they sell their bodies to make an honest living. Aren't they better than the hundreds of men and women who earn their money through illicit means and then visit these prostitutes, while the next day they'll be seen condemning prostitution with a poker face?
My fifth point: What gives you the idea that American culture advocates multiple partners? There are various Americans who live with the same partner throughout their lives, very much in love and, very happily married. Please do not generalize or stereotype a people or a culture in such a casual and crass manner.
Six, if Indian women pick those guys who can shell out the most cash then, don't Indian men also pick out the bride who is fair and lovely, knows to cook, is slim, comes from a "good family", comes with the biggest dowry, etc.? If you have certain criteria then why shouldn't I have mine? As far as bedding goes, guys with the most cash also pick out the most beautiful girls na?
Seven, please do not stereotype or generalise this community or it's members. You know nothing about me, or what I stand for, or what I'm doing regarding any given issue.
Eight: Sure India is reeling, along with the rest of the world, but that does not detract from the issue at hand. Of course the farmers are suffering, why don't you do something about it if you feel so strongly?
Ninth point: Maybe this small group of elite women is protesting for the right to wear jeans and move about freely so that tomorrow all those oppressed women in villages can also be free. If the rights of the elite are taken away then what hope do the oppressed have?
Ten: Dude, condoms are safe, period. Condoms prevent the spread of STD's, especially AIDS which is spreading rapidly. Having single partners does not eradicate the risk of AIDS. Also, in an already overpopulated country, condoms prevent unwanted pregnancies. What the hell is so wrong about condoms anyway? Drinking has been a part of India for many years, if it's wrong then ask the Government to ban liquor completely. Pubs do not only mean sex, drugs and drinking. Again I must ask you to stop stereotyping, not everyone who supports condoms and goes to pubs has multiple bed partners. Even married people frequent pubs, and then come home to each other. Culture is culture, whichever way of life I choose to follow is none of your business-unless it's illegal, or causing you physical harm.
Just because this group of women might fall into the minority does not mean that they are, in any way, alien. They are as much part of this country as you or I.
@Freespirit :.
ReplyDeleteFew agreements especially on your note about Indian males falling prey to a huge list of “wants”…..
Delusion however is a big word. It could mean either pretending to sneak obscurity or obliging with an ailing vision/sensibilities. However I am quite removed from being deluded. My reasons are many and attending to a blog and sharing these experiences are limiting.
The counter points
[One] Had it not been for this Mangalore Pub incident, would you and your team spin off this so very helpful and awareness campaign? Where were these pink undie campaigners when a pregnant woman in the heat of the day raped and fatally left to die before her son ( 10 points if you can guess whom I am talking about)? Perhaps too distant for the group you all folks cater to.
Do you know by this kind of lewd campaign how many more innocent women are getting victimized? Knowing fully that our country has lot of social barriers, ethnicity , cultural and educational differences, a campaign that attempts to send pink undergarments capture very little of caring factor that you speak about.
[two] Sneering ? This is a blog, a community that can be shared and accessed all over the world, unless you own it completely. I doubt the democratic nature of your forum, they way you and your group tend to downlplay people who are opposed with the “nature” of your campaign. As I said, right from the start, this is a closed group. It basks in this inflated ego that some where down the line, this is a grand Gandhian movement.
[three]Sociology and economics go together makes an interesting assumption. There is another thing and it is called psychology. Heard about Sigmund Freud? That many crimes against women are because of sexual aggression has been quite well established. For example this Ram Sene guy. He is ugly and perhaps never had a decent girl friend. He sees a young teen in skimpy clothes and by all laws of nature he is sexually aroused. The difference is that he is a pervert, while a sensible man will control that “natural” urge , this guy will go for a kill, as he did in Mangalore.
Or take the case of this lady from an MBA college in Noida doing a striptease and later the trusted boyfriend releases it on the net. Another example of sexual aggression , first by the lady of refusing to marry the idiot after having the “fun” and next the gross violation of trust by the guy.
Panties, pink or blue are not an answer to cure perversion. It needs certain amount of self control , proper parenting, school monitoring and understanding crowd mentality. Companies every where in the world have dress code. Colleges are places to study not an exotic summer camp…. Public dressing is key to understand many acts of abuse, crime and harassment.
To some extent, women fall prey to violence because they misjudge the crowd. Loud dressing that widely appeals “Fuck-me-now” anywhere in the world not just India can attract criminals. Men will be men , unless there is some latent homosexual or blatant impotency detected. The campaign would fail if it does not also translate to these psychological aspects of being a human.
[four] Is your protest all about wearing jeans and right to live freely? Gosh! Is your vision of freedom so constrained!!! Come out of that shell and walk around India and you will find women more free than you could have thought about. The not so forward and not so loose women of India are brilliantly freedom loving. Do meet Medha Patkar , you will love her.
If eating, drinking, wearing clothes of desire, and freedom to mate anyone , anywhere is the definition of liberty to pink panty campaigners, I must say the campaign is aptly named!
[five] Americans are cool. I haven’t stereotyped them. Infact you have undervalued a very open culture. Multiple partners is the American way. No stupid American will agree to stick around first as a virgin before teens get over and then to wed aimlessly for eternity. Compatibility is what Americans decide and I appreciate such openness. The element of hypocrisy that we see amongst Indians is limited for them. Indian forward women see the freedom part not the openness. Applies same to Indian males too.
.
[six] I am not against pubs, free sex or whatever your generation is craving for. Here generation does not necessarily mean age. Nor do I care who wears a condom and why should it be worn. There is a vast expense of humanity in India who live and work, have small goals and smaller desires – schools that rot in shambles, farmers that weed dried hay, women who work beyond what their lungs can breathe…The average fisherwoman in the Mumbai suburban train or the lady clerk at the local bank seldom care for these so loud issues of pink panty campaigners. As I stand with them in the crowd , I indeed feel this is a tiny minority ….and the freedom this community aims for is seriously alien.
Learn to read your critics if you wish to make success. NDTV /Hindustan Times will forget you no sooner than you expect as sensationalism drives their bread and butter. Some of your chief campaigners are people who have the ability to criticize your ways.
@ predict:
ReplyDeleteFirst, your comment tells me you have absolutely no interaction with American women. You'd be proved wrong a thousand times with the idiotic generalizations you propose. There is no need to stereotype Americans in support of entirely bogus arguments.
Second, I don't see how a campaign that asks for the enforcement for civil liberties and public safety is not pan-India in character? Are forced abortions not a violation of constitutional rights? Is harassment of prostitutes by policeman exactly the kind of mentality that pink chaddi opposes?
As far as I can tell Pink Chaddi celebrates diversity of opinion, thought, and lifestyles in India, and asks for the enforcement of constitutional rights and law and order.
If you think those issues are trivial, just go away. Instead you construct a strawman, a completely factually incorrect portrait of this campaign, and forward a factually bankrupt ad hominem attack. This is completely unproductive -- your comments are repetitive.
By all means, post about your actions that are promoting GDP growth. Maybe you're a Keynesian; in that case, gift yourself a pink chaddi. Support retailers!
@Predict...
ReplyDeleteYour comments make me wonder are you one of those guys who never got love or was left by some girl because you did not earn much.
I know there are other big issues in our country, but that does not mean we stop fighting for the other ones. Every issue needs fighting.
If some girl is harrassed and humiliated publically, we do need to fight for it. If a girl is wearing jeans, it does not give any right to a man to molest her. This is all this fight is about.
As for the other problems, this forum is not for them. Please find the appropriate forum for dowry, abortions, GDP and post your comments there.
@Port & @Swati,
ReplyDeleteJust 15 years back a woman calling herself a loose and forward and exchanging undies would have been termed officially a slut, whore , prostitute or a call girl.
So your great idea of bringing forth a sluty revolution on the pretext that you have an over stimulated drive, concern and sympathy for the harassed is alien, fake and rather an exotic display of apathy for what India is.
The fight is all about the rights of a woman to wear jeans!!! Is this a campaign at all or an online comedy episode?
As for Swati well I welcome your speculation about me being a desolate loner having let off from a sweet fantasy love because I did not earn much. LOL! Guess this has got to do with Balaji Teleflims. Well since you have given this rare opportunity, let me brag a little. This love of mine is sitting next to me now and going nuts with smiles all over her face like a small kid. Infact she is angry as to why I am wasting my time teasing the panty campaigners. Being a post grad from one of the finest technical schools of India, she left her job to join an NGO, devoting most of her time in issues that concern women and children and spending her leisure moments in writing, journalism ….. Mostly in “jeans” all the time, clothes and likes/dislikes is not a feminist issue for her, for feminism to her is an eternal inspiration. As seen thru the lens of Kalidasa’s Shakuntalam, feminism is a revolution within. Jeans, pubs, nudity , fag, free sex do not define a culture. It describes a state of one’s likes and dislikes. Violence against women is a social issue, not cultural.
The i-pill generation of yours have vaguely defined feminism in terms of sexual freedom. India has gone past that age. Nudity and sexuality was celebrated in India even before the world could glimpse an art into it, and now we are harping for jeans!
Why all this campaign looks so fake, is because of the filth that has poured over from various quarters to support this movement. Oh how many times we find women puking outside pubs, toxic smell all over and clad as scantily as possible – all because their parents have an excess money to spare… The campaign is supportive of these species, a set of people who won’t even bother to look at the poor beggar staring at her …and when they call for revolution, the void concern for “general harassment on women” it appears like Queen Mary’s famous pre French Revolution sermon “If not bread why can’t they go for cakes!”
On one hand India is struggling to combat terrorism, recession, a painful and grim farming sector, resentment amongst laborers and growing lawlessness ; while on other hand we have a stock of few South Mumbai pub going girls demanding right to drink in the pub and wear jeans, and protesting so by sending their under pants…..
No wonder why my comments appear illusive, repetitive!
@Predict;
ReplyDeleteClaps; Fully agree.

ReplyDeletePrecit has scored well in this debate.
ReplyDeleteYou people send pink chuddies and should not stop this campaign till you 'achive' your great goal of 'personal' freedom without resposibilities or commonsense.
If you get any spare time please spend a little to know what excatly is going on around the 'community' you live in and hopefully, i think you can find some better cause to fight for and a nobler way to fight against it. Wish you all da best!
To Predict. Sir whoever you are. Your words are the only ones that make sense. You said it just like it is.
ReplyDeleteI would not say that this campaign is being spearheaded only by the ones who are angry for their hedonistic ways have been hit at. There must be well meaning individuals as well.
But the whole point remains that there are so many issues in India. Why is this any bigger or deserving of more attention? If all the campaigners wish to do something, i suggest start a revolution of actions not empty campaigns. Go to the field and do some real work!
@ Swati
ReplyDeleteMa'am if you are such a crusader then why dont you start with the rights of women in your city. Why dont you spearhead a campaign bringing justice to the women who are abused in various forms. It has been happening since before you and i were born. So unless you are doing something about the women who do not even have access to basic health care stop your preaching!Mr. Muthalik and his goons are dogs for doing this but this is just one of the many things that need attention! Be more holistic in your approach. The pub going, jeans wearing women have a right to do whatever they please. They need protection for sure but not half as much as the voiceless many!!
@Advitya
ReplyDeleteThanks. I am sure there are many more conscious souls resounding with familiar resonance. Despite the kind of scathing bitterness and personal attacks by Swati, I find many acknowledging posts coming along to my inbox...not surprisingly many of them are women. There are atleast 15 people all women who dropped me a msg saying how disgusted they feel about this crude and vulgar feminism the panty campaigners have been championing for.
I am confident that this group would remain an NRI underdog , salient to its alignment to ideals and ambitions that have very little to do with India..
A vast majority of Indian women would not mesh up a scantily clad Ravi Verma's natural maestro and club that with an alcoholic, lusty city girl - the panty campaigner's poster on "Indian Cultures"
Culture is never a loose and forward phenomena. It means reformation, renaissance, revolution , all within the social fabric that extends to stretch itself to near perfection. Indian women stand out in her appeal for renaissance. She - has been the pioneer for all Indian revolutionary thoughts be it the docile mother of Shaeed Bhagat Singh or the fiery Rani Laxmi Bai, winning battles when no men had the potency to do so. She- has been challenging for long the dominance of males in Indic religions and cuts short of all the lengthy doctrines by imposing the most stringent intellectual demands. Matri and Gargi had taken that revolution further...
And when it came to resurgence, we find in the voice of Sarojini Naidu unleashing the freshness of freedom Such has been the touch of Indian women that those who came close to her, awakened to a brighter consciousness - Sister Nivedita, Mother Teresa.
Millions of Indian women, see feminism on those revolutionary lines. Not on grounds of free sex, a crude and vile western adoption of booze, smoke and trash compilation.
I stand united amongst all these "voiceless" multitudes . It has been their silence for long that needs attention. We cannot rake up the brothel while push the dove to its grave. Indian women - the dove of sublime intellectualism, the mother of all revolutions and perhaps the everlasting symbol of immaculate chastity will awaken , we cannot let her die amongst these aliens can we?
@Predict: Why is i-pill so wrong? And why are you focusing only on the immorality of 'women'?
ReplyDelete
