The Pink Chaddi Campaign kicked off on 5 February 2009 to oppose the Sri Ram Sena. The campaign is growing exponentially (44,324 members at this point in the life of our Consortium of Pub-going, Loose and Forward Women) and that is not surprising. Most women in this country have enough curbs on their lives without a whole new franchise cashing in with their bully-boy tactics. Of course, a lot of men have joined the group as well.

Look in your closet or buy them cheap. Dirt-cheap. Make sure they are PINK. Send them off to the Sena.

Step 3: On Valentine's Day we do a Pub Bharo action. Go to a pub wherever you are. From Kabul to Chennai to Guwahati to Singapore to LA women have signed up. It does not matter if you are actually not a pub-goer or not even much of a drinker. Let us raise a toast (it can be juice) to Indian women. Take a photo or video. We will put it together (more on how later) and send this as well to the Sri Ram Sena.
What happens after Valentine's Day?
After Valentine's Day we should get some of our elected leaders to agree that beating up women is ummm... AGAINST INDIAN CULTURE.
For right now, ask not what Dr VS Acharya, Home Minister of Karnataka can do for you. Ask what you can do for him. Here is his blog. Send him some love.

@rampantheart: Agreed with you.. to oppose one extreme, we need not go to the other extreme.. It's important to maintain our balance and fight wisely. This protest should come out as a support for individual rights regardless of gender, but with such kind of protest, one more message that goes is, the support to pubs! To my mind the 'loose, forward women' lose the advantage by talking the same talk as the SRS.

However, I do feel, at the same time, such a campaign trivializes the seriousness of the incident that sparked all of this. The web is a wonderful vehicle for all manner of initiatives. However, it is most effective when protocol and politics are followed to engage, express, and achieve. ironically, in the so-called fickle sensationalist west, activists have learned to be wary of such push-button politics on the net. Pub-goers are not the only citizens of India. They are not the only people who can think. Get out of the stinky pubs and get out on the streets to demonstrate your 'ideals'. I know some people just need a reason to go drink. I think this might be it.

It's ridiculous to criticize this as being too glib or 'not serious enough'. It's a form of protest that has evolved spontaneously enough to deserve respect in a democracy. It's at least infinitely better than to sit behind little boxes criticizing work being DONE and demanding "real protest" that follows some tired protocol. And perhaps even better than grabbing them and beating the living daylights out of them, no matter how tempting that may seem.

Also a suggestion, please create a option to send an online Valentine card to the Ram Sena leader and his followers. The logo would make an excellent card and this can be made click able with an option to air our views. All these online cards can then be collected and printouts can be sent with the box of chaddis.

RSS is not Ram Sena and but some of Ram Sena members might be a part of RSS.

I read about this in ToI today and saw this camapign as a way to let out some of the steam that I was holding in since the day I read the news about the incident in Mangalore. I came straight to this blog to see what was going on and read through the comments. I support this initiative as a great "in-your-face" campaign and a great way to answer those hooligans who hit the women "on their face" in Mangalore. I am not a woman, I do not drink and so do not go to pubs either. But I support this campaign because this is a campaign for freedom. It is not necessarily a campaign for the freedom of women or their right to go to a pub, but it is a campaign to stop a bunch of hooligans from appropriating the soul of this country. No one in this country has a goddamn right to say that he is the guardian of this country's culture. Culture is something that evolves as time goes on. I have two daughters and I do not intend to allow them to go to a pub until they are adults and old enough to make decisions on their own and understand what going to a pub entails. But I believe that every adult - male or female - has the goddamn right to go where they want to go in this country. One thing that people need to remember is if you allow such hooligans to run around practicing their beliefs nothing will stop them from one day coming at you because you are not wearing a langot, or because you work in an MNC, or you drive a car, or whatever reason they will come up with tomorrow. Stop them in their tracks right now.
ReplyDeleteOne more thing..to those who think this has become a frivolous campaign. When you start a campaign, you need to limit yourself to a narrow campaign to focus on one problem at a time. If you make it too broad, it will lose its meaning and potency. So, let us make this campaign a success and use its success to move forward.
God, what a brilliant idea this campaign. As someone who especially loves pub-going, loose, and forward women (not to forget pink chaddies), I LOVE this campaign. Hope that true son of India (or should we change that last part?)...using his name would be giving him and his ilk unwarranted publicity when what he needs is infamy...really sees red this time around (or is it pink?). Long live PLOF womankind. Love you all. It is time the truly Indian, liberal, progressive, global community in this country made themselves heard loud and clear.

In America, pubs serve as a meeting point where gals and guys to meet "dates". Adults go there too to unwind and relax. In India, with the new freedom that the current generation has, pubs go a step beyond and are used for rave parties and drugs. This has to be stopped. I am not saying that the Ram Sena or any other moral police force should do it. Let the law and the local police take care of that. Again, we as parents have to guide our wards so that they do not go astray.
ReplyDeleteHey! Got glued into this wonderful, crazy and creative campaign just yesterday! I am on my way for the purchase of the pink chhadis and shall soon drop it off at the collection point! I am also passing the word to as many friends and family who I feel will participate in some way or the other. I feel public shaming is one of the best strategies to tackle those who make patronizing and culturally myopic statements! However I also feel that since a pressure group like minded people is in place, we should keep in touch and keep this group active till the state elections of Karnataka. (I am not sure when they are happening as I am not glued in much into the Karnataka politics). So that the youth and the more sensible parent generation ensure Ram Sene losses elections with a thumping defeat and don’t ever dare to even think of what they just did at the Mangalore Pub!

Urmi, I understand your concern about this approach trivialising the issue, but in a way this is as serious a response that they warrant. Fact is, we need to start somewhere, and this is a great unorthodox, shocking, and in-your-face theme which ensures people get involved and things gather momentum. Marches and rallies have become too passe as have polite letters to the editor. We need mass action and this is a great platform...remember what bra-burning did for the feminist movement? Every movement needs some sort of symbolic action...P.S..I hope he gets a lot of used lingerie..as Indian as it gets, lol

Dear all who have a problem with the RSS picture and believe that the RSS would never indulge in such activities,
ReplyDeleteI think this protest is against right wing conservative politics in general and anyone who attempts to control women or men for that matter under the guise of culture and Indian (Hindu) values.
Also the RSS has only distanced themselves from the SRS because they feel the means used by them are wrong, not because they feel their objective was wrong.
I feel the use of the RSS picture signifies the larger problem of religious fundamentalism we face in India, out of which incidents like the Mangalore pub attack stem.

As expected, along with the publicity, the Pink Chaddi campaign has attracted a lot of filth. I think it is wasting our time to even counter the filth. Our battle is with the larger mass of filth: The Ram Sena. Lets concentrate on that. Let’s focus on what we have and we have a great deal of support already! Probably these guys are feeling threatened by it all. Let us not respond to them. They never fail to prove that they are the face of lumpen elements in the society!

This is just brilliant! This is what these ram sena and all other senas deserve. We need to tell them that we oppose them, and we also do not take them seriously. This issue is one of feminism, and women(also men) need to protest in order to win. All this is because women are still seen as cattle and someones property instead of as an independent adult who can do whatever the hell she wants as long as no one is hurt. All our pre independence social reformers who worked so hard for the equal status of women would be so sad to see women still being treated as second class citizens. These Senas will never win.

Sending and Post(Via Courier)is not so preferreble to the addresses. You can also accept some cash or via Secure login(internet banking)so that those who are out of india or too busy to drop a box of chaddis to ur given address across INDIA can give you some contribution which you can collect and Buy some cheap chaddis(even silk ones will do). This will add more momentum to this cause. wat do u say. I understand taking Cash is not always acceptable but youu can also have this as an option.

History of India has had numerous evidences of "swadeshi maal" branding! The West is only confessing it openly and we're keeping it in the confines of our bedrooms! Same goes with our politicians having spare tyres vs. Clinton and Lewinsky!
