Attack # 1
Time, Date of Attack: 13:10 to 13:40 | 17.02.2009
My name is Geetanjali. At 13:00 I get into my car start driving home. Almost immediately I notice a motorbike with 2 men chasing horning, hooting, and over-taking my car in a dangerous manner.
I turn onto 100ft road. The bikers follow me, then while over-taking the driver shouts at me and spits onto the window of my car. I make an angry gesture at this unprovoked action. The bikers then block my car from the front and ride very slowly. Cars behind us are now honking loudly.
I arrive at the 100ft Rd and 12th Main junction. I intend to take a right and have my right indicator on. The bikers also take the right turn and then stop their vehicle in such a way as to obstruct my passage.
The driver of the bike proceeds to get off his bike and starts attacking my car. For the next 5-6 minutes he then proceeds to beat on the car and shout obscenities in Kannada. I do not retaliate in anyway. No-one tries to help!
The pillion biker looks shocked at his friends actions and begins to roll the bike to the left side of the road. I seize the chance, and try to drive away. While doing so, the front bumper of my car grazes the bumper of the bike. This infuriates the attacker further.
He gets onto his bike and chases me. I realize that I don’t know where the police station is in this locality, and decide to seek refuge in my friends house. With the attacker following me closely, I drive straight into the basement parking area of an apartment in Indiranagar.
The attacker parks his bike outside and pursues me into the building. I get out of my car in an attempt to flee, but he corners me against my car and proceeds to shout obscenities while constantly stepping closer and closer to me. This goes on for about 5-10 minutes. I do not retaliate verbally except to shout for help from the security guard.
By now he is less than a foot away from me. I cannot move back as my car is behind me. I slap him on his right cheek. He lunges at me and tries to punch my face, I manage to evade him, however he succeeds in punching my jaw.
At this action of his, I start to shout at him loudly in Kannada about his shamelessness at raising his hand on a woman. He is startled and steps back. The security guard now steps in and tries to push him out of the building. I use this opportunity to run towards the staircase.
I have just managed to climb 4 steps up when I realize that the attacker has run outside to the road and has started to come running back in with a large stone in his hand. He is continuously shouting and swearing.
I run upstairs and find the resident of the 1st floor apartment rushing out of her house. I caution her about going downstairs. The attacker is still shouting. I hear a crashing sound as he throws the stone at my car.
From the 1st floor apartment window, I can see that the attacker is waiting outside the gate of the building. I ask the owner of the apartment to call the police, but she refuses to do so. I then ask her to call the guard via the intercom and ask him to take down the license plate number of the attackers motorbike. By the time the guard picks up the phone, the attacker rides away.
Post-mortem
On questioning the guard, he said that the attacker took down the license plate number of my car and threatened to find and harm/kill me later. None of the neighbors who were watching helped or took down the license plate number of the attackers vehicle!
I have never felt like leaving my country for good. Yesterday I felt that. For that day I was homeless and orphaned and helpless in a way like never before. The residual feeling today is one of deep sadness at the frailty of humanity. The end of innocence for having stared at the nobility of the human spirit caving into the heart of darkness.
I am tired.
Attack # 2
Time, date of Attack: 11:15-11:30
My name is Jasmine. I am a Bangalorean. At least I think I am. I fell in love with this city two years ago and shifted base from Mumbai. I was on my way to work at Koramangala at around 11.15-11.30 in the morning when my auto broke down at Ulsoor. As I was hailing another one a white Quallis slowed down next to me and the occupants said something to me in Kannada. I rolled my eyes. That was their provocation.
I do not know if that angered them but the more I dwell on that unforgettable episode in my life, they seemed like predators, on the hunt. Before I knew it four middle-aged men emerged out of the vehicle and began verbally assaulting me.
First they started hurling obscenities at me in Kannada and then it became physical. They started touching and pulling at my clothes. One of them tugged so brutally at the shrug I was wearing that he scratched my neck. Their goal — to show the collected crowd the top that I was wearing underneath my shrug.
When the shrug didn’t come off with their tugging, the violence of the tugging increased. In self defence I hit out at an offending hand that was trying to disrobe me. The response, he slapped me hard across my ear. Then they began trying to lift my top up while making references to ‘pink chaddi’ – the only words I could understand of their tirade.
I told them I would call the police and one of them arrogantly proffered me his phone to make the call. The few people who dared to gather and watch were dumbfounded and no one said a thing. Some passing cars even slowed down, but not one stopped to help.
The whole time, the four of them kept up the tireless rant of obscenities, calling me names and trying to humiliate me in front of the gathered crowd. They couldn’t bear that a woman was looking them in the eye, and each time I raised my head to look at the tormentors, they kept pushing my head down, threatening me not to look at them in the face. While they were hitting my head, an army vehicle drove past. They stopped and intervened. Finally the army men helped me into a rickshaw to continue on what I thought was going to be a regular day at work.
It looked like these guys just wanted to make a spectacle and humiliate someone that day. And I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don’t want to imagine what would have happened to me if the army men hadn’t put an end to the humiliation. I do not want to talk to the cops as even with hardcore evidence, the police didn’t do anything about the Mangalore episode and those hooligans are out. I do not want to talk to the press and be anyone’s political scapegoat. The whole situation was a nightmare and every time I talk about it, I relive it.
Attack # 3
Time, date of Time: 9:00 p.m, 24th Feb
My name is Lakshmi. I was attacked on 24th Feb at around 9:00 pm. I was walking down Vasanthnagar after I’d wrapped up work looking for an auto. At the underbridge I noticed four men walking down the road towards me. I crossed over to the other side, just in case. I continued to walk down towards Kodava Samaj. Suddenly I realised that the four men had crossed the road as well. Once they were close enough they started pushing me and passing comments. I tried to ignore them, stepped around them and continued walking. They turned around and walked back towards me and started pushing me around. I finally lost my temper and turned and told them to leave me alone,
One of them came really close and started abusing me in Kannada and Hindi. At that point I pushed him away from me. The next thing I know I’m in the middle of a roadside brawl. The guy who spoke to me punched me and the other three started hitting me as well. I fought back and all of us were in a scuffle All through the attack I was abused in Hindi and Kannada for wearing jeans and fighting back. After what seemed like an eternity I heard an auto go by and I shouted out to him. Luckily for me he stopped. For a split second the four men were taken aback and let go off me I pushed them and ran across the road, climbed into the auto and begged him to take me home. The four men followed me to the auto and tried to drag me out. At that point the auto guy started the auto and rode away. The whole attack must have happened in a span of about 5 or 6 minutes.
Attack #4
Sanjana:
I was attacked at the junction of Vasanthnagar 8th main and Palace Road junction. 10.30 in the night. Two men on a bike, slowed down, socked me on my jaw and fled away. they lost control of the bike as I lunged at the t shirt of the man sitting behind - still not enough time to get a look at the number plate. Have already filed the complaint with the High Grounds Police Station - there was a battalion of my friends who were with me till 1 am.
Attack #5
SF
I was attacked on Tuesday, 17/2/2009 at 4:45 PM in Sanjaynagar, Bangalore. I was walking home from work and stopped by the roadside to give biscuits to one dog and one puppy that I have been looking after for some time as I love animals and have a very special place for street dogs in my heart. On the afternoon of 17/2/2009 I was kneeling to open a package of biscuits when I heard a car coming down this small street at very high speed. The car was going so fast that it scared the dog and he let out one or two barks. The driver of the vehicle swerved as he came near where the dog and I were and tried to hit the dog with his vehicle. The dog became very terrified and ran down the street with the vehicle in pursuit, seemingly attempting to hit the dog as the first attempt had failed. I was horrified and afraid for the dog so I jumped up and ran into the street and yelled after the driver to slow down and stop what he was doing. Upon hearing me, the driver slammed on his brakes throwing dirt and debris all over. He then put his car in reverse and deliberately struck me with his vehicle, driving me into a motorcycle that was parked at the side of the street and knocking both me and it down to the ground. I was not seriously injured so I jumped up and ran to the driver’s window and yelled at the criminal again through his open car window. I noticed that there was a passenger in the passenger seat but did not notice if anyone was in the back seat of the vehicle as the driver again hit the gas and sped down the street and turned left to make his escape. The license plate number and make and model of the offender’s vehicle is KA 01 MA 8218, a Maroon Hundai Accent.
The police have been completely unwilling to take this attack seriously, shuffling me around to three different police stations and constantly discouraging me from filing a report. Their inaction is reprehensible and they should be called to account. I deserve better and the women of Bangalore deserve better as well.
This attack has left me feeling disgusted with the police and angry at the attacker. However I am not going to let this stop me from doing what I normally do, I still stop at the site of the attack each and every day to visit my dogs but it had tarnished my image of India. As a foreigner living in Bangalore for the past two years I have had mainly good experiences but I am afraid that this particular one may tarnish the memory of all of those past. I hope that the government and the police take the appropriate action but it won’t happen without the strong, steady and deafening voice of the people.
There've been other attacks we know of. We await details.
Outrage against indian democracy. These men will all be repaid in full at some point. Sick, senseless people.
ReplyDeleteI think that a peaceful rally is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, let us all agree upon the fact that this goonda group that attacked women in mangalore did so for cheap publicity and to intimidate business people in mangalore to pay up hafta. Which is why, we are going to pledge that we will not give them any more publicity.
Therefore, from now on, let us pledge that we will never mention the name of that goonda group ever. We will never mention them by any other name other than goonda group, that way the name of their group doesn't get unnecessary publicity. We will only refer to any goonda as just goonda or rowdies.
Repeated attacks on women citizens is to be viewed as the government apathy with the law and order situation in a state. The central government needs to look at this as a law and order situation and take some action.
Now that there is a going to be a peaceful march, I would suggest that a prior email is sent to the police commisioner informing that a peaceful rally will take this route to finally end at his office inorder to discuss the safety of women citizens of the state.
The media needs to cover this rally .
The email campaign is a great idea. The emails need to be sent to all people responsible for the safety of citizens in the country.I would advice not just women from karnataka but also women from all over the country to take five minutes and please send an email expressing your concern about the safety situation in the state.I would also suggest that women and men(the law abiding proactive non-ignorant and non-selfish,non-pschotic men of india) please use their own words in expressing their fears about the law and order sitauation in the state in the emails to the central govt. and in their blogs and in local peaceful campaigns urging more safety measures for all citizens.
I would also suggest that all women deliberately wear jeans and tshirt (even if they are not in the mood to do) and assert their personal choice of dress.
I do not think that any normal guy would go and try to strip a woman in public unless he is vey sexually perverted and frustrated and is trying to vent out his personal anger on stranger.
I would also suggest that the dress code for everyone attending all peace rallies and meeting is only going to be jeans and tshirts.every human being has every right to dress how they please.
The government needs to understand that half of the voters in the state are women. Needless to say that many of them voted to bring the present state government into power. It is the duty of the state government to manintain law and order situation in the state. There is absolutely no excuse to allow citizens to fend for themselves. We are paying taxes so that the police force is paid salaries so that they can protect the women and men of the state.
Meanwhile, all these incidents must be a lesson to all voters for all future voting sessions. Voting is done by secret ballot. Please go and vote to only non extremist groups or political parties .Otherwise the state will become as lawless as it has become now.
I also suggest that we form a proactive chain of citizens all over the country. We need to form a blogger chain that is interconnected by atleast one follower . Information about proactive rallies need to be exchanged via blogs and emails.
Looks like we need to start another independant struggle here. Ahimsa and peaceful rallies are the way to go.Also , women, even if you are from the smallest city plese go out and vote for the most nonextremist parties .
And yes, please only wear jeans.
Any vehicle that stops near you , immediately note down the vehicle number and sms your friends the number. Call 100 as soon you see someone approaching you in a threatening manner.
Stay firm, stand right there and tell them not to come near you.Ask them a few questions about indian history and culture to those goons and pretty soon , their ignorance about indian culture will be out there for everyone to see.
If you are a bystander, go far away from this hussle, look for a public coin booth phone and immediately call 100 and tell them that somebody is being assualted at this particular address.
India is a democracy and vote is our power. Whether male or female, fight for your liberty. Use your vote.
Unless the men that were beating up women were wearing dhotis, they are not really bothered about culture at all. These men are just sore losers who are jealous of smart independant women. It is ridiculous when you see jeans clad men wearing shirts and then hitting women for wearing jeans. It is absolutely ridiculous and a joke.
ReplyDeleteThese men need to wear a katchha, a dhoti and a angvastram. No shirts and no jeans and no underwear allowed for these psychotic men.
This is sick. Whats going on in Bangalore? This is my favorite city.
ReplyDeleteGood luck,
ReplyDeleteNow bottle the demon.
you gave them undue publicity and hurt some sentiments somewhere and brought into limelight their motive and gathered some public good will.
otherwise that mangalore incident and the thugs who perpetrated it,could have been forgotten, Now it appears like this;
A group of woman feminists and guys who want to network sent "undergarments(pretty vulgur way of expressing it) to an elderly person who happens to be heading an organization which is pro hindu .
You did it because they are against pub culture.
BTW why are you all colour blind? are you infuriated only by Saffron?
Now that we have already figured out the the govt and the police force compete with each other in apathy towards safety concerns,
ReplyDeleteWomen of bangalore and mangalore, please learn to protect yourself.Next time, if any bikers or people in cars get down and try to approach you, stop your vehicle, Immediately dial 100, make eye contact with the attackers, tell them that they have no business talking to you or touching you or attacking your on any pretext. If they try manhandling you, defending yourself against attackers is perfectly legal. Please, kick every one of the attackers in the groin(that is why nature devised something called the groin reflex) and then sms all your friends. note down their vehicle numbers and post them here in the comments section.file an FIR, and if the police refuse to file an FIR, immediately mention which police station it was that refused to file an FIR in the comments section.
The police might be apathetic , but the voter is not. We don't vote you guys so that you guys can let molesters run rampant while you make fun of our peace rallies. I am pretty sure that these people are such cowards that they won't even take action even if the women in their own families get attacked. I mean,Everything is brushed under the carpet and no one does anything. Because everyone is a wimp and a coward, the bystanders included.
Bangalore is dying. I am infuriated and shaken by what's happening in my city. Excuse me, but doesn't the entire absurdity of it all hit anybody. Women getting abused, insulted and hit just because they were dressed the way they were comfortable. And what is being called provocative is just because of Denim - just another fabric. This is not about religion, culture, patriotism or any such thing. A bunch of perverts just thought now would be a good time to come out of their closets. I hate the fact that the cops dismiss if off as just a 'usual' eve-teasing incident. I hate the fact that by-standers didn't even bother to shout, let alone try to rescue the women. I hate the fact that I am worried every time my sisters, wife or friends step out alone. It's about time the women just kicked some ass. Carry pepper spray or anything sharp that can be used as a weapon. Stay alert all the time and keep your cellphone ready to call or note down any detail. click photos with your cel-cams or note down license plate numbers. And i think it's time we, as by-standers, learnt to be a lot more than mindless mannequins and help out. It could just as well be someone we love next time around.
ReplyDeleteYou should of beat his ass..(I know that sounds terrible- but this is self defense) Besides..I'm sure the lady who was attacked by the chimp WOULD have fought till she over powered him. This just emboldens them!
ReplyDeleteOk...before I speculate anymore...who were these attackers??
Where is Supreme Court??Where is Law?Where is Order?
ReplyDeleteLets wait to happen this with ourselves, then only we will do something, till then keep on reading and feeling sad :D
good on you women to make an account of this public. and also to those of you who spoke to the police and filed complaints: a respectful salaam.
ReplyDeletethis sunday, in delhi, at the lodi gardens, i and my mother witnessed an attack on a young couple. we figured it was two plainclothes cops assaulting them, and we quickly raised a ruckus and asked them to stop their illegal beating.
in a country, where law enforcement is lax or even callous, it takes serious commitment and nerve to have your rights respected.
These are horrific stories. So sad.
ReplyDeleteSpeak and yell and scream louder and louder so the whole world hears you women of India. You are not alone.
Much love and support.
xx
Its really sad to learn that bangalore is becoming such an unsafe place. I am from bangalore myself, but study in manipal so i'm unable to participate in any marches/demonstrations.
ReplyDeleteI feel that we should form a group... A group of youngsters, strong, fearless, responsible, and who will intervene to help when they notice such things; who will set an example to the other bystanders, who watch these things happen as if it were a movie...
We youngsters need to take up this responsibility... I really feel so...
I hope that the victims of the above attacks are able to put these incidents behind them, and move ahead in life stronger than before without losing confidence in themselves.
Peace...
I have created a timeline of all known/reported instances of illegal moral policing in Karnataka (eg ABVP banning burkas, harassing mixed-religion groups, and attacking young women) at my blog (http://avalentineforindia.blogspot.com). I also linked to the testimony provided here. This may be useful to mediapersons or researchers planning to document these incidents.
ReplyDeleteI took the liberty of posting a copy of this map (with attribution, of course).
ReplyDeleteAnd wasn't Bangalore considered a safe city until recently?
ReplyDeleteI am sorry that the women in Banglore are being attacked so ruthlessly. Today its Banglore , Manglore, tomorrow it might be just any city....
ReplyDeleteIn Geetanjali's case , the most shameful thing is that a woman runs out , Geetanjali alerts her about the attackers who might have attacked her too. But this shameless woman doenst agree to call the police !!! Wow that woman must be proud of her womanhood!
Great watchman cant even note down a number! he cant stop people from entering a building! The shameless people from the building (who didnt help either) , heres a suggestion for you - fire the watchman coz tomorrow they will manage to break in your flats and your women will suffer .till some near ones suffer we dont take actions .
Bravo, Policemen ! SF was hit down by a car - are you waiting for the day the car runs over her? Oh you only deal with the murder cases or the security of VIPs ? There was a time when women used wish for a policeman husband - to save her from rouges , if time comes. but now I dont think they want that, what good are you policemen ?
What is really sad abt all these events are....no matter how many pace compaigns we carry out...men are dawgs....not all men..but i am referring to these men aho have assaulted women.....
ReplyDeleteIf this is really kali yug why doesnt god punish them ?...why doesnt god act on their actions imemdiately...
You are absolutely right. Men are stray dog by nature unless they are taught to respect women and have family values.
ReplyDeleteYou are also right to say that it's Kalyug.
A famous song from a bollywood movie has following lines and clearly indicates it's KALYUG time...
Raamchandra keh gaye siyaase
aaisa kaljug aayega
hans chugega daana tinka
kawwa moti khaayega
AND IN THE END IT HAS FOLLOWING LINES....
mandir soona soona hoga
bhari rahengi madhushaala(Pubs if u dont know)
pitaa ke sang sang bhari sabhaa mein
naachengi ghar ki baala
But if I heard it correctly the Kalyug is suppose to last 5000 years...So GOD still has some time before he will take notice of Kalyug sins...My apologies if my information is not correct.
The crimes against women can be REDUCED and will be REDUCED if our media doesn't portray a woman as an object or commodity. The provocative images from women actress in Bollywood, electronic and print news media... loose and sadakchhap language used in news...Role model of modern generation Aishwarya Rai giving kissing scenes just before becoming Mrs Bachhan... discussions about which hero has smooched how many heroines and who lost his/her virginity at what age...and the list goes on and on. These sins are being accepted as the qualities.
The Indian news media and bollywod sends two signals to people who have recently reached the age of puberty and plays havoc in the mind of even those who are in their middle ages...
1) Message for girls/women is that it's your freedom to do whatever you like. I think this is a noble cause. This is a really good way to move a country forward. A woman can and should do almost everything a man can do except few jobs such as fighting on the front in a war against a foreign nation.
But our elite news media and bollywood also tells them that it's ok to have multiple men in your life just for fun and it's ok to do dirty dancing, cheap sadakchhap talks, get drunk and forget about something called "Descency". These kind of women are called sl_ts even in western world. In India there is a different word for it called "Kulta".
Media is fueling this kulta behaviour in Indian women without informing them the poor and corrupt state resources such as policing and judiciary. There is very little chance to get any kind of justice if they fall into the hands of rogue elements of the society. Monica bedi is a prime example. But there are hundreds of thousands like her who no one knows about.
2) The message for men is not so good. The media like NDTV, star news, aajtak etc. with the help of bollywood movies and wave of second class cheap heroines are helping in fueling this stray dog behaviour in men by showing vulgarity from bollywood movies, cheap shows, serials NON-STOP and 24X7 . This include our award winning news channels NDTV, aajtak, star news etc. etc.
This kind of TAMASHA news creates a society which is morally bankrupt and doesn't help in any way to create a good society. This irresponsible behaviour of news media is increasing crimes against women and in general against whole society. In return news channels have lots of crimes to report every single day and are never short of them. In other words media is FEEDING on the FILTH it beams every single day. This will ensure that each of these news channels are immune even to a deep recession.
Ram Sena's role in crime against women is perhaps 0.01%...Bollywood's wave of cheap heroines from past decade may have contributed 10%. But the non-stop 24X7 filthy news where women is a commodity from our ELITE NEWS media shoulders rest of the responsibility.
I hope these jokers including BARKHA DUTT and others who claim to have won the best journalist award should realize their responsibilties. Look in the mirror first before you come on the TV to resolve the burning issues of this country.
What is wrong with these people! This is an outrage! The national goverment should step in if the damned state government cant do anything. I lived in Bangalore for 3 years and my parents were there for 10 years and not once during that time was I accosted. i have a house in Bangalore and now I am scared to come and visit the city. What if I am attacked?
ReplyDeleteIts shameful what's going on in Bangalore. I think its high time the big MNCs like Infosys and Wipro also step in and address this. After all many women work for them too dont they. So where are you Mr. Murthy?
its really pathetic to hear about bangalore
ReplyDeletebut no one can help it ,so girls please carry
an acid spray or a knife when ur out im serious
These attacks are deplorable, men are very jealous of women's progress and intelligence. In the West men are in crisis and that seem it been has caught up in the East. Women have been forced to make a better life for themselves by working and getting an education. Many men are lazy and it is evident that women are more hard working and intelligent. Look at the universities, there are more women than men attending. In schools the girls have taken the lead academically. Men can no longer control women financially so they feel threatened. It is time men take a good look at themselves and grow up and become men and not bullies. Real men need to defend these women not standby and do nothing. Those perpetrators should be confronted with a taste of their own medicine.
ReplyDeletethis is unbelievable! is it a crime to be independent and live the life we deserve? these men just need an excuse to molest innocent women. they know jack shit about traditions and indian culture, all they want is women who are going to bow down to their commands. they cant stand the fact that women today are becoming increasingly independent and liberated and they are scared that they are not gona give in to their demands. they cant stand the fact that a women can fearlessly look them in the eye and demand her right to freedom...
ReplyDeleteJust because we wear western cloths, doesn't mean we stop being someone's daughter, sister or wife. Just because we wear western cloths, we don't stop praying to the god we rightly believe in. Just because we wear western cloths, doesn't mean we stop cooking in the kitchen and managing the house. Just because we wear western cloths, we don't stop getting educated and choose our careers...
Don't judge us by the cloths we wear or the religion we follow. Don't target helpless innocent women who are living a life they deserve, you are nothing but a bunch of cowards, not man enough to stand up for a woman!
Whats happening man?..huh! never thought people would act so barbaric...
ReplyDeleteall those attacks seem to very familiar scenes in movies but the only difference is there we have some hero...here only villains .. it seems like there is no safe place for women.. the whole city should be covered with CCTVs..
These are very deplorable acts against any woman. The dastardly acts these men commit in the name of culture is horrifying. Is molesting any woman part of this so called hindu culture?
ReplyDeleteWould they like the same thing done to their mothers or sisters? These guys are all third rate ba****rds who need to be punished for the groping they do in the name of culture.
